We're raising funds to produce A Detour to Mexico, the musical co-authored by the late Mrs. Sammy Davis, Jr. to inspire youth to strive for greatness. Sammy Davis, Jr., was called "The World's Greatest Entertainer," but he'd sacrificed his education when he began performing at the age of four. Before he died, he asked his wife to reach out and urge kids to get serious about their education. That message, and an inspirational lesson, are shared in the wonderful story, A Detour to Mexico.

The 'Rat Pack' Spotlight is on Great Teachers!
The Rat Pack star, Sammy Davis, Jr., knew the value of education. He'd sacrificed his own to begin performing when he was only 4 years old. He couldn't read or write until he was an adult, and always regretted it. Before Sammy died, he urged his wife to reach out to kids and stress the importance of education. The late Mrs. Sammy Davis, Jr. and her partner, Pam Sherrod, began various projects to inspire kids to reach for greatness, both in their academic and personal lives.
This season, RisingStar31 Productions is pleased to continue the work they began with several exciting projects to inspire young people to reach for higher goals. We look forward to publishing and documenting the achievements of educators who are using innovative measures to successfully promote literacy and academic achievement.

This season, Risingstar31 celebrates the long-anticipated release of A Detour to Mexico, with two special video contests which are connected to the book. The planning of the contests actually began in 2009, but was postponed after the death of Mrs. Sammy Davis, Jr., one of the co-writers.
A Detour to Mexico was inspired by a request made by the famous Rat Pack star, Sammy Davis, Jr., who’d sacrificed his education to begin performing when he was only four, and urged his wife to stress to youth the importance of getting an education. Pamela Sherrod, who wanted to share inspiring stories of miracles, teamed up with Mrs. Davis to create films that fulfilled both goals.
A Detour to Mexico is a dazzling musical about the adventures of a talented family of musicians and it offers a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of the world's ‘undiscovered stars.’ RisingStar31 now moves forward with plans to produce this magnificent feature film.
We realize there are millions of talented stars just waiting to be discovered, and we've used this opportunity to launch an open audition for gifted actors and artists to help bring this story to life. The public is invited to participate in the judging during this nine month competition . . . a unique opportunity to be 'assistant-producers.'
A Detour to Mexico is presented in its original screenplay format, and provides an entertaining story that family members, young and old, will enjoy. We’re pleased to celebrate the release of this unforgettable story and the production of the film with the following two contests.
‘A Detour to Mexico' Video Competition, turns the spotlight toward the talented acting and production skills used to produce a 3-minute scene from the story. One prize of $500 is awarded to the winner (s) of this competition, as well as the showcasing of their video on the RisingStar31 website, media coverage, and an opportunity to perform in the film, A Detour to Mexico. The $10 Entry Fee covers the application process. The deadline for entering the contest is November 30, 2012.

One prize of $500 is awarded to the winner (s) of this competition, as well as the featuring of their performance on the RisingStar31 website, media coverage, and the opportunity to perform in the film, A Detour to Mexico. All musical entries must be original compositions, performed by the contestants and submitted on a video of up to two minutes. The $10 Entry Fee covers the application process. The deadline for entering the contest is November 30, 2012.
